If there is any one thing that Mass Effect almost directly rips off, it's Star Control 2, since several of the species from SC2 have direct analogues in ME. But that doesn't matter, because nobody has even heard of SC2 I mean seriously.

That's why I suggested Ace! play it first. It's the spiritual sequel.

I should also point out that ME raises interesting philosophical questions about the ethics of artificial intelligence.

I don't know what I was thinking. Is the Ur-Quan Masters actually a complete game? Or is there some other way to play this game?

Ace!, the Ur-Quan Masters is totally worth it. If you can, get rid of the 3D0 graphics, voice acting, and music, etc. etc. and go back to the original computer version.

Star Control 2 is one of the biggest, richest gaming experiences you can have. If the term "Honor-driven Scottish War Pterodactyls" appeals to you, you've got no reason to avoid this.

It's true that Mass Effect is a bit of a mess, but that doesn't keep it from being fun. In many ways it really adds to it. If nothing else it makes the game different. It's an intensely rich, detailed, vivacious galaxy that's 100% worth the visit.

Mass Effect 2 fixes many of the problems the first game had, but ends up creating its own large list of flaws, most being that the shooting elements make it too similar to any number of other games out there (combat in the first game may not have been terribly great, but at least it wasn't derivative) and that the game has been extremely streamlined, but it's still amazing. Full disclosure, I'm not quite finished with it yet.

I'm glad you're enjoying the narrative in Kotor, Ace! It's definitely the game's strongest point. It has lots of flaws, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

If you want to play a Star Wars FPS, play Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast. For about half, it's a good, well paced FPS. It then becomes an amazing third person lightsaber combat game, with the best lightsaber controls in any game to date. The storytelling is also good. Kyle Katarn is a more compelling protagonist than most Star Wars expanded universe characters.

If you want to experience his full arc, I guess you would start with Dark Forces, the Jedi Knight, then JK2, then Jedi Academy, but really, JK2 is the one you need to play. Dark Forces is a doom clone wrappen in a Star Wars narrative (it's still fun, though). Jedi Knight is a first person/third person shooter based on the Quake 2 engine, with a heavy focus on story (told through sometimes awful FMV cutscenes). Jedi Knight 2 is a Quake 3 engine game (with wonderful animations that still look good today), with a great balance of story, good voice acting, and amazing lightsaber gameplay. Jedi Academy is less about Kyle (mistake number 1), messed with the lightsaber combat in ways that detract from the fun (mistake 2), has a weak story (mistake 3) and the most annoying supporting character in all gaming (Rosh Penin, the most unforgivable aspect of the game). All that said, it's still a decently good time.

In short, play Jedi Outcast (JK2) and have an excellent time.
