Health thread time

Postby leokef on Thu Jan 21, 2010 1:51 pm

I just bought a scale and found I'm right at 230 pounds, which is the most I've ever weighed, and I've gotten so many stretch marks on my body that I'm starting to look like Victor Zsasz. I don't really feel that heavy, but I have noticed being short of breath recently just climbing up the stairs a few times. So I'm on a mission now to drop down to 200, the weight on my driver's license. That's usually how people do these things, right. I think it's time we got a health thread going since I know Pip, at least, is fat as hell too and we can make a project of this, one that we all have slightly more incentive to do than say, write a novel in a month or review SNES games or organize a porn exchange that gets more and more depraved. We lose weight, we feel a lot better about ourselves, boost our confidence, get more and hotter ass; they fill pages of textbooks with benefits such as these.

So, let's share some healthy habits, proven methods that we know of that help us stay in shape or lose weight. I know there are a few fellow fatasses among the people I'm asking, and I know there are a lot of skinny asses who don't know shit about how they magically keep the weight off. But together we should be able to come up with some valuable insights that'll help us out. I know I'm cutting out all soft drinks and anything else too sugary. Now I'm just drinking water and some very lightly sugared tea. Cutting out desserts and limiting portions. I'm also prohibiting myself from pizza unless it's just the best damn pizza around. I've also started some exercise in the morning, stuff that I can do fresh out of bed like working out with some dumbbells, situps, stretches, so on to get the blood flowing. Once we get the old water heater out of the basement, I'm going to pull out my brother's old weight bench and set it up. That should burn some calories. And maybe I'll use it too!

Supposing I do all these things or the majority of them, I should be on track to lose some weight. Who's with me.

I started exercising when I was beginning to get enlisted into the Air Force until that all fell apart, but instead of stopping I've managed to keep to it and actually push it further than before. At the moment I'm doing a full-body workout Mon-Wed-Fri (about 1hr low-volume, high-intensity workout for strength) and running on Tue-Thur (treadmill, a 30min run with a 0.1 mph increase in speed each run, mostly until the weather stops being shitty).

Four months ago I did absolutely nothing for exercise, so this has been really great and I definitely notice the improvement. I've gotta work on my diet a lot as I don't believe I'm eating enough and of the right stuff. Not that I'm eating crap but just not enough, say, protein and veggies.

Also, is basically my absolute point of reference/bible. What a fantastic site.

Leo, I'm about the same weight. I think I'm a bigger build (6'2"-3"ish with lots of muslce) but I need to drop some weight like a pair of pants. So I've been going to the gym 3 times a week, working on cardio (lots of time on the elliptical) and some arm strength exercises. I've stopped eating after 10pm (unless dinner comes that late, which it will some days). I think we can actually do it this time. My goal is a visible outline of a 6pack by May. I've got the muscle, I just need to let it show.

I've ballooned to OVER 250 and its time to stop being a fatty. Im drinking hella lots of water, no more sodas, beer.....come one....you can do this....... will be kept to the most minimum possible like maybe once every couple of weeks. No more fast food and eventually I will ease into a workout of some kind.

i might get in on this thread too. i'm a shade under 6 feet, and 192lbs-ish. I could stand to drop 20 lbs or so, but im more interested in getting in some form of better shape.

one thing i've done recently is started buying whole grain pastas. they're smaller too, so i eat less of it. a good start but i really need to crack down.

i used to exercise while i watched the daily show, which worked for a while, but it wasnt long before i forgot and got lazy

Yeah. Post your workout at the end of any given day you workout. Like, today, I did 3 sets of 20 pushups while listening to music. I plan to do crunches tonight.

It's true, you lose weight and up your metabolism so you can have a less restrictive (and therefore easier to adhere-to) diet. Cardio is obviously the best way to lose it, but even just strength training burns a ton more than you think if not right away. Pluuuuus... every pound of muscle burns around 30 calories a day on its own, and that adds up to a lot of passively burnt calories.

But removing the junk from your diet is obviously a great idea. Don't go overboard as it'll make you miserable and not want to stick to it. Just cut back a little bit (if you drink a few sodas a day, limit yourself to one or two, or switch to diet).

Oh, and unless you're going straight cardio I wouldn't worry too much on actual weight (as nobody should; you need to be finding your bmi for the result to not be skewed by muscle). I've been eating about the same myself and I've put on about 4-5 pounds in the last four months even with the cardio on top of the weight lifting. I don't look 4-5 pounds fatter but I do somewhat look (and feel!) 4-5 pounds stronger.
