
The protagonist, John Egbert
is the current project of Andrew Hussie. You may have heard of Problem Sleuth, his previous work which was based off point-and-click adventure games. Homestuck is, in Hussie's own words, "the conception of HS had its roots in loosely combining the themes and feel of Earthbound, The Sims, and Spore."
Why has it caught on so much? Hussie is a great storyteller, and the characters are strongly written and unique. I won't provide examples here, you'll have to read on your own.
His art is simple, but emotive.


It is also rather funny.
